The Adult, Nontraditional & Transfer Student* Center (ANTS Center) is a welcoming space that celebrates adult, non-traditional, and transfer students while remaining open to all students at Austin Peay State University. The center is a place to lounge, study, or engage, designed with real student lives in mind.

Students who stop by the ANTS Center can receive academic and career resources, campus navigation support, connect with peers, or simply take a break between classes and responsibilities.

The center offers comfortable lounge areas; tables for studying or gathering; a conference table, large whiteboard, and printing access; along with a lactation space and a kitchenette equipped with a refrigerator and microwave. The space is also family-friendly, featuring the ANT Farm, a designated play center for students with children.

*What is an Adult or Nontraditional student?
An adult or nontraditional student is not defined only by age, they are also students with life circumstances different from the typical traditional student. These circumstances include, but are not limited to:
- Delayed Enrollment: Did not enter postsecondary education in the same calendar year they finished high school.
- Financial Independence: Classified as independent for financial aid purposes
- Part-Time Enrollment: Attends college part-time for at least part of the academic year.
- Full-Time Work: Works full-time (35+ hours per week) while enrolled.
- Dependents: Has dependents other than a spouse, such as children or elderly family members.
- Caregiver Status: Is a single parent or primary caregiver.
- Age: Often 25 or older

- Adult Learners: Returning to finish a degree or starting for the first time later in life.
- Career Switchers: Pursuing new skills to change industries.
- Military Veterans: Transitioning from service to civilian education.
- First-Generation Students: The first in their family to attend college.

About
Accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design, APSU’s art + design program offers studies in drawing, digital media, graphic design, illustration, painting, photography, ceramics, printmaking, sculpture, and art education. The Department is housed in the College of Arts and Letters and consists of 16 full time faculty for approximately 275 students. Three on campus galleries also support the Art & Design programs. The Department of Art + Design recently moved into a new art and design building. The Department of Art + Design also houses the Goldsmith Press and Rare Type Collection, an exceptionally large collection of wood letterforms.

Vision Statement
The Department of Art + Design's vision is to provide a creative environment that enables students to ask questions, think critically, and take risks as they gain the knowledge, skills, and confidence necessary for a meaningful, productive life and work as critical makers in a global society.

Education Goals for an APSU Art & Design Major
To facilitate this vision, each student should demonstrate:

The fundamental skills necessary to implement a concept through technique, material, or discipline-specific strategies;
The development of a personal style or vision as executed across a variety of media, ideas, and creative activities through critical making and critical analysis;
The writing and communication skills necessary to effectively translate their personal style into a focused, relevant conversation about the student’s own work and the work of others;
A basic knowledge of significant works and movements in the canon of world art and design, which includes both formal and iconographic content;
Advanced comprehension of focused topics in art and design history as a context for the student’s professional creative practice;
Professional practices within the creative economy.

The Educational Opportunity Center or EOC is a grant based program which provides counseling, admission and financial aid assistance to potential first-generation and low income adults who are interested in enrolling or returning to a post-secondary institution.

The Educational Opportunity Center's main office is located in the Ellington Building on Drane Street on Austin Peay State University's main campus. In order to better serve eligible participants who live outside of the Clarksville/Fort Campbell communities, we also maintain Outreach Centers within our target areas of Montgomery, Houston and Stewart Counties in Tennessee, and Christian County in Kentucky.

The Educational Opportunity Center, which is a division of the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs at Austin Peay State University, is sponsored as a free community service. The EOC is funded by the U.S. Department of Education in the amount of $444,751.00 for 2022-2023 Fiscal Year.

University Recreation strives to provide the APSU community with opportunities to develop and enhance all aspects of wellness through quality recreational programs and services.

In January 2007, the $11 million Foy Fitness and Recreation Center opened, featuring a 3-court multi-activity gymnasium, 1/10 mile indoor walking track, 26-foot climbing wall, the 10,000 sq. ft. Drew Simmmons Fitness Center, consisting of cardio and resistance training space, a cycling studio, two fully equipped fitness studios able to be joined into a single large room, locker rooms and food service area. In Spring 2008, a new outdoor swimming pool opened with lanes for lap swimming, space for water aerobics and play and locker rooms.

We offer a variety of informal, educational and competitive activities to meet and expand the interests and abilities of our constituents. We regularly facilitate fitness and nutrition workshops as well as organize sport leagues and tournaments. The department also sponsors adventure recreation outings such as white water rafting, hiking and camping, a comprehensive group fitness schedule, personal training, and much more.
